A chatbot for your website
A website chatbot is a chat window in the corner of your site. Visitors type their question in full sentences and get an answer straight away, instead of filling in a form and waiting for someone to ring them back.
This page explains what such a bot does, the different kinds, what it costs and how to tell a usable one. It is written by a provider, and we say so openly, which is also why it tells you when buying one is not worth it.
What a chatbot on a website actually does
On a business website a chatbot has exactly one job: to answer the questions your visitors would otherwise ask by phone or through the contact form. In almost every business that is a manageable number of questions that keep coming back, day after day.
- It answers the questions that keep coming back
- Prices, services, opening hours, delivery times, how a job runs from start to finish. Everything that is somewhere on your website, just not where the visitor happens to be looking.
- It is there when you are not
- Enquiries arrive in the evening, on Sundays and while you are on holiday. Anyone who gets no answer at 9pm asks the next business on the list. A bot answers while the visitor is still on your site.
- It turns a question into an enquiry
- A visitor who is only browsing becomes a name with a phone number and a request. That is the part where a chatbot actually pays for itself.
- It shows you what your website is missing
- The questions it cannot answer add up to a list of what your customers want to know and cannot find on your site. No other tool produces that list as a by-product.
Three kinds of chatbot, and when each one fits
The word chatbot covers three things that have little in common, technically or in the effort they take. Mix them up and you end up comparing prices that cannot be compared.
| Kind | How it answers | When it fits |
|---|---|---|
| Click menu | Fixed buttons, fixed answers. Ask anything that is not on the menu and you get no further. | When there are very few requests and they are always the same. For example: opening hours, directions, request a call back. |
| Do-it-yourself AI | Understands full sentences. You set it up yourself, maintain it yourself and check yourself whether it is talking nonsense. | When someone in the business enjoys tools like this and regularly has time for it. |
| Managed AI bot | Understands full sentences and answers from the knowledge you have provided. Setup, operation and data protection are handled by the provider. | When nobody in the business has time to look after it, and a wrong answer would be costly. |
Swipe sideways to see the whole table.
Veradicta belongs in the third row. How we describe the first two is our own assessment, not a market study.
The honest assessment: Veradicta is a managed service at a fixed monthly price: setup, operation, data protection and a named contact are included. The bot runs almost fully automatically, around the clock, and gives the most to businesses with daily visitors on their website: it answers their questions instantly and files the enquiries worth your attention in the portal. The difference pays off where a wrong answer would be costly and nobody has time to look after a bot on the side.
How to tell a usable chatbot
Six questions you can put to any provider. They cost nothing and sort the field more reliably than any feature list.
- 1. What does it do when it does not know something?
- The most important question of all. A bot that answers every question with something will sooner or later invent a price, and your customers will take it as binding. The right answer is: it says it does not know and tells the visitor how to reach you.
- 2. Where does its knowledge come from?
- From what you have given it, or from the general knowledge of the language model? Only the first can be controlled. Ask to be shown where you change an answer and how quickly the change takes effect.
- 3. Can you see what it has answered?
- Without access to the conversations you cannot tell whether it is helping or doing harm. Ask for the list of questions it could not answer. A provider who does not have one does not know where their own bot stands.
- 4. Where is the data held, and for how long?
- Servers in the EU or somewhere else? What deletion periods? Is there a data processing agreement under Article 28 GDPR? It is a legal requirement as soon as the provider processes personal data on your behalf, not a favour.
- 5. What does it really cost?
- Ask about the setup fee, the minimum term, and what happens once the included allowance is used up. Being charged extra automatically is the most common nasty surprise.
- 6. Can you see it before you commit?
- Not the provider's polished demo, but a bot with your own content. A provider who will not offer that has a reason.
Our answers to these six questions are set out in full in the frequently asked questions and on the page about data protection.
What a website chatbot costs
At Veradicta, €29 a month on the Small plan with 250 messages, and €69 a month on the Medium plan with 750 messages. There is no setup fee. The contract runs for an indefinite period; there is no minimum term.
All prices net. For businesses only. As a supplier based in Germany we do not charge VAT on services to UK businesses; you account for it yourself under the reverse charge. The full breakdown with everything included is on the pricing page.
How the bot gets onto your website
With a single line of code in the source of your existing website. You add it once, and from then on the chat window appears on every page. Your website is not changed, nothing is moved, and you can remove the bot at any time by deleting the line.
It works anywhere you can add your own HTML code, including WordPress, Wix, Jimdo, Squarespace, Webflow and Shopify. You do not need a dedicated plugin.
What your part is afterwards
Adding the line takes minutes. We set up the knowledge for you from your website; your part is to read it over and add, in plain language, whatever your visitors should know and is still missing. The more precise that is, the better the bot answers. After that we reckon on a few minutes a week to go through the open questions.
That is exactly what the 14-day free trial is for: the bot runs on your site and you decide, on real conversations, whether it is any good. With your own content, on your own website. No payment details, no automatic renewal. If you decide not to carry on, simply say nothing.
Data protection in brief
A chatbot processes whatever visitors type into it, and that regularly includes personal data. That makes it a matter for the GDPR, even if your business is small.
- Conversations and contact details from the chat are deleted after 30 days at the latest, unless something else has been agreed.
- The chat window sets no cookies. No IP addresses are stored with the conversations.
- Data is stored on a server in Germany.
- To produce an answer, the question is sent to Anthropic in the United States, on the basis of the EU standard contractual clauses under Article 46 GDPR.
- A data processing agreement under Article 28 GDPR is concluded with every customer before any processing begins.
- The chat window carries the notice required by Article 50(1) of the EU AI Act, stating that an AI is answering.
What this means in detail, what role the transfer to the United States plays and which wording you can use in your own privacy notice is on the page GDPR and chatbots.
