For trades businesses
A chatbot for trades businesses
In the trades, enquiries rarely arrive when someone is sitting in the office. They come at half past eight in the evening, when the customer is thinking about their heating after work, and they go to the next firm if nobody replies.
A chatbot on your website answers the questions that come before every job during those hours, and puts the serious enquiries in front of you with contact details. This page shows what that means in the day-to-day running of a business.
The questions trades businesses hear again and again
They are the same in almost every business. They arrive by email in the evening, on your mobile at half past seven in the morning, and at midday, just as you are up a ladder.
- Roughly how much will it cost?
- Do you cover our area?
- How long will it take?
- Is this something you do?
- When could you come and have a look?
- Is there a grant for this?
- Do you offer an emergency call-out?
None of these questions needs the boss on the phone. All seven can be answered by anyone who knows the answers. Those answers go into the portal once, and we do the entering for you, on every plan.
An example: a renovation enquiry
A typical case for a trades business: at 9.14pm someone writes that they want their flat renovated, walls, floors and the bathroom, and asks whether the firm takes on the whole job and when it could start. The bot confirms what has been entered and explains the process: before giving a quote and a start date, a colleague comes to look at the flat, usually within two weeks.
The second question is where it gets interesting. The person wants to know roughly what it will cost. The bot says it cannot give a reliable figure from here, because it depends on the size and condition, and that this is exactly what the visit is for. Then it asks for a phone number. The person leaves it along with a time when they can be reached, and the next morning the enquiry is waiting in the portal.
That is the whole trick, and it is deliberately unspectacular: in the trades, a bot that knows its limits is worth more than one that has an answer for everything. An invented statement about whether a house is suitable sticks in the customer's mind, and you have to put it right at the visit.
What it means for you day to day
- Fewer calls nobody needs
- Enquiries from outside your area, jobs you do not do and questions already answered on your website are dealt with by the bot. What is left are the calls where you are actually needed.
- Enquiries with substance, not just call-back requests
- Instead of “please call me back”, the portal tells you what the job is, where the property is and when the customer is available. You know before you pick up the phone whether it is worth it.
- Evenings and weekends
- A large share of private enquiries come in outside your working hours. Until now, the job has gone to whoever rings back first the next morning.
- A list of what your customers cannot find
- The questions the bot cannot answer are listed in the portal. After two weeks you know what is missing from your website.
What setting it up means for a business
The technical side is one line of code in your existing website. Once it is in, you have the bot. If it does not work first time, we do it together with you online.
The real work is the knowledge, and we take that on: when we set the bot up, we enter it from your website and your documents, on every plan. You check that the seven questions above are answered correctly.
Later on, you enter new prices or times yourself in the portal. You can also re-import your website, PDFs and Word files there yourself.
After that it runs free of charge for 14 days. With your own content, on your own website. No payment details, no automatic renewal. If you decide not to carry on, simply say nothing.
